Eastern Illinois University is a state university located in Charleston, which is the county seat of Coles County, situated in the US state of Illinois, with a population estimated at a number of more than 20 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, also being one of the principal cities of the Charleston–Mattoon Micropolitan Statistical Area, along with the nearby city of Mattoon, IL.
Eastern Illinois University was established in 1895, first starting as Eastern Illinois State Normal School, serving as a 2-year college for teachers, quickly expanding into a comprehensive university with a broad curriculum, which was later renamed as Eastern Illinois University, the name by which the institution is known today.
EIU has an enrollment of approximately 12 200 students, to whom it offers baccalaureate and master’s degrees in arts, business, humanities and science, through several colleges, which include the College of Arts & Humanities, the College of Business & Applied Sciences and College of Education & Professional Studies, also offering other academic divisions such as the Graduate School or the Honors College. According to the US News & World Report, EIU is a Masters university, being ranked in the top half of Masters universities within the Midwest region.
The athletic teams from EIU are known as Eastern Illinois Panthers, who compete in NCAA Division I (I-AA for football), in the Ohio Valley Conference, including in the Missouri Valley Conference, for soccer and in the in The Summit League, for swimming. EIU is the only NCAA Division I institution which offers a women’s rugby sports program. In 2010, it was announced that EIU will also join The Summit League, in men’s soccer.
